I think I know who you're talking about. He was a Chinese -Hawaiian guy who became a local politician in the 80's? I remember seeing him surf when I was a kid; he used crutches to walk and rode a fiberglass board prone/knee/sitting. Don't remember his surname, but I'm sure it was Chinese. It's quite possible he's still holding some office in Hawaii. Politicians usually have very long tenures there.

Well, didn't know him or see him in person but that sounds familar...I think there was a segment on him in an old surf movie. We're talking 1960's, right? Haven't got a clue what movie or who did it though.

^^ The guy I was thinking of is Leigh Wai Doo. I remembered his name while cooking Chinese food last night, lol. I Googled him and found an article about his recent work, and a blog mentioning that he was honored w/ some other historical surfing figures at the Hawaii Surf & Music Expo this past summer.

Og-Azn,

Memory works that way. I did a bit of searching and found Fred Hemmings had polio and was also a political figure, however, he didn't fit the paipo bill as far as I know. I was going to ask John Clark, however he is busy at present.

I recently e-mailed kage regarding how he was going catching up with you. I haven;t heard back so I am assuming he feels he can still catch up.

regards

Bob
