Kage,

I know you are stirring, but I used the term "prone alaia" on Swaylocks because we know paipo can be ridden in big hollow waves and there is some footage of stand-up alaia being ridden in hollow waves (the video of the guy with an alaia on the deck of a SUP which he jettisons to ride the alaia being one example).

The ancient Hawaiian name for a prone alaia board may have been kioe. Prone style riding is called kipapa. From my research and reading over the past few months the two principal terms for ancient Hawaiian surfing boards (the word was used for mean all forms including prone, sitting, kneeling and standing), were olo and alaia.

It has generally been understood that the olo is a large board used by the Islands' aristocracy and the alaia was a smaller board used by the common folk, it seems that the real distinction was the plane shapes of the boards and the performance characteristics of the alaia (ability to "hot dog" ride the board at an angle and to turn). Come to think of it, the aristocracy sorta needed huge boards to ride the gentle, easy breaking waves because the aristocratic people were huge and were expected to become humongous! It is kind of hard to imagine a 400 lb. person on a thin alaia. Now I digress.

Turns out, according to many sources, that the alaia were as often ridden prone as in other positions.

I don't get too many for Brazil - however, I don have to add a remove paramenter to keep from getting the Japanese/smoke hits (e.g., see http://www.paipo.nl/images/pop_332.jpg).

One of the surf clubs Uruguay refer to stand-up surfing as "paipo" which is probably one of those weird word/thing inversions like the mapmaker that reversed Puerto Rico (rich port) and San Juan (Saint John). See http://www.paipo.com.uy/

Things are starting to get complicated again... Rolling Eyes

I'm confused by the fact that paipo/bellyboard/handboard/pronecrafft interest me but the whole finless wood standup board thing just does not register...my "first reaction" is either disinterest or actively questioning the point. I assume it's just me or the stage I'm in. Confused

I find at times like these beer can help.

Ah, beautiful vid there. That's just about where I'm at these days... Wink

Seriously.

I have too many years of experience to desire their level of craftsmanship and materials though.
