WRPF FM "The Afternoon Show" by Dave Denison
I remember about the radio station as clear as crystal.... of course my crystal has been
sitting on the shelf and is not quite as clear....but I do remember Tim Hast, Kenny Garcia
and I, frustrated about having no radio station in the area playing American music, waltzing
into the general manager Ramirez's office at WRPC (a 50,000 watt commercial
station!) and asking if they would play some of contemporary rock.
At some point, one of us had the cajones (definitely not me!) to pitch the idea of us putting
on our own show, using our own albums. To our astonishment, the manager agreed. Thus
started, at 5pm every weekday, the "El Show de Afternoon." I don't remember how long we
rowdy, nutty hippie types lasted, but we had sponsors! We found out that we had somewhat
of a following at the Ramey Air Force base and that may have been why we lasted as long
as we did. I think the management eventually got fed up with our unconventional attitude
and the coup de grâce came when several times we tracked in mud after walking through
a construction site on the way to the station from my house.
I didn't realize Campus School at one time had its own station. That's cool. I don't
remember hearing about that when I came in '69. It's a shame it wasn't there then. Maybe
when the school moved to the new location it got lost in the shuffle. If you have any
recordings or pics of the station, please post them!
