was small so we headed north in search of some overhead waves. Folks
leaving Wilderness had us wondering if there were any decent surf as we
hadn't seen the Borinquen Point blanketed white as the day before. Turns
out that Wilderness proper consisted of the Rincón Zoo migration.
The waves were nice enough, semi-glassy peaks with nice slides to the left
or right, but way too frequently with two or more companions. We opted
for one of our other regular spots where we shared some not quite as nice
waves of similar shape and consistency with a shortboarder, a longboarder
for a short spell, and periodically a couple of bodyboarders. Alex
stayed ashore since his stomach virus was still bothering him so there
were about three of us to share the many peaks and walls that were consistently
in the overhead plus range. Picked up a couple of "spros" along with
a plate lunch of arroz amarillo con gandules and pollo (we just call it
cafe con leche at my favorite local grinds, the Cafeteria Borinquen, but
the cafe is all made with good local Cafe Crema in expresso machines with
scalding milk added).
After an afternoon nap we
headed over to a friend's pig roast for rest of the day. Jim's wife being
Cuban, the lechón was prepared accordingly, along with rice and
black beans. There were tons of appetizers and other treats... one
of my favorites being a slightly spicy, fresh guacamole and papaya dip.
Jim and family are on a two year assignment from their home base in the
San Francisco Bay area (Point Pedro is the local break). One of his friends
from back home, working on a construction project in San Juan, drove over
for the festivities so we talked story about our respective surfing digs.
Also met Tubey, the owner of the Longboard and Coffee Shop, located just
east of the Ramey Base, swapping stories about Caballo in SJ and local
spots and happenings. His gf/wife is a talented local surfer that
recently competed in South Africa. I understand she likes charging double-overhead
Wilderness. |
