Correspondence with Delta on Checked Baggage Fees for Bodyboards & Kneeboards

My October 2008 e-Mail to Delta Airlines on Baggage Fees

I am considering booking a flight with Delta between the Washington/Baltimore area and Liberia, Costa Rica, in late March 2009. However, I am concerned about possible baggage charges for my bodyboard/kneeboard. I have never paid fees for transporting my single board in a well padded bag that seem to meet your guidelines for similar equipment in weight and length, i.e., Golfing Equipment and Ski or Snowboard Equipment, where the restrictions are not to exceed 50 pounds and outside linear dimensions not to exceed 80 inches. However, I don't want my board to be confused with a surfboard and be subject to a $300 fee each way. Can you provide me written assurance? Thank you in advance.

The kneeboard is 50 x 20.5 x 2 inches and the bag is slightly larger than that but not much. Enough room for a couple of towels for additional padding. The bag with board is around 54 x 22 x 4 inches and weighs around 25 to 30 lbs. I have never paid additional fees for the board & bag on Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, USAir and Air France during the past 20 years.

Thank you for your patience regarding your question about Delta Air Lines baggage fees and policies.

Charges for surfboards/kneeboards on tickets issued on or after July 31, 2008 for travel on or after August 5, 2008 will be $175.00 for domestic travel and $300 for international travel.

For tickets issued before July 31, 2008 all surfing equipment is charged $80.00 for domestic travel and $150.00 for international travel up to 70 pounds.

Surfboards/kneeboards are one board per bag, additional boards will be charged per board, the excess bag rate.

Surfboards/kneeboards over 70 pounds will be charged the excess weight charge of $150.00 in addition to the flat rate fee. Boards over 115 inches will not be accepted.

Surfboards/kneeboards are not accepted on flights operated by Comair or Atlantic Southeast Airlines.
