I put together this little blank with leftovers from another project.
2" thick X 43"X 19", roughly patterned after one of the Goddard templates.
Plan is two small keel fins near the rail.
I have my own opinions but I'd like to hear your input on rail shapes before I start to whackin' away at it. _________________ Prone to ride. |

Uncle G,
My preference is for hard, squarish rails - just about the entire board length. Just a bit softer at the nose.
My fibreglass Goddard style board has really hard rails. I was taking my swim fins off on the sand one day & the board washed over my toe and made a 1/2"slice across the top of my toe.

You wouldn't happen to have an edge view photo of said board would you? _________________ Prone to ride. |

My personal preference, based on a long-ago conversation with with my bodysurfing engineer borther-in-law that struck my common-sense bell a thunderous blow, is for hard release edges only in areas that can be transitions - waterlines.
I've seen recent photos of tail sections of contemporary surfboards that look to me much like skimboards...just turned down on top, or kind of boxy. And on the front, forward of where the outline starts to curve in to the nose, I like soft rails.
The "blank" looks great. How much do you think something like that is going to weigh? Mr.Mike, some of yours? Holiday weekend coming in the U.S......

Just weighed the raw blank and it's right at 5lbs.
I suspect, even with a heavy glass job and wood fins it will likely come in under 10. _________________ Prone to ride. |

Uncle G,
I'm home next week so will take a photo as soon as I can. I prefer riding finless which also contributes to my preference.

Yeah, if you are goin' finless, thin rails are practically a necessity.
I'm going a different direction with this one tho'. _________________ Prone to ride. |

If it was me, I'd make it like a bellyboard version of a Hynson downrailer.
Disclaimer: Ya, I'm wierd.
Watch this video to see some serious experimentation with blunt rails. It's squatty pedestrian, but still very interesting. Riding a wave involves very complex math, and I think the factors W x F (the willingness to have fun) can sometimes overpower hydrodynamic inefficiencies:

Poobah,
I like the idea of a W x F factor.

My rails are rounded like a surfboard. They are roughly 70/30. I tend to use fins but it still flyes without them its just a lot looser so you can do tricks

I'd be interested to know the dimensions of your board and it's thickness. I'm considering getting a thinner version of a board I have and am interested in just how thin I can go. |
