This was a bit of a strange project. I've only seen a couple of pics of Ray Ho'okano and his massive paipo, and only footage of one wave (on the trailer for the Hydrodynamica movie). But I found myself haunted by dreams of making one for myself. I'm a total atheist and skeptic, but when I found out that Ray had passed away couple of years ago I felt really driven to make the board. Well here it is, I've got one more coat of sealant to go and then I'll be waiting for a good day to get it wet!

....and here's where the other half of the sheet of ply ended up. A HPD-ish paipo, 42' long 31' wide. 1/2" spoon around the nose. My inexperience with a real sander/polisher has meant that it'll get a coat of paint after the urethane, just to hide the blemishes. Otherwise, I'm stoked with how it turned out!

...and you don't have to paint the whole board. For example you could do flames coming down from the nose. |

Great idea Poobah!
The Ho'okano paipo is 47' long, 31' tail and 21' nose. It's 12mm thick marine ply sealed with urethane. I rode it in some small waves this morning and it goes really well. It has amazing trim speed, but it doesn't turn as well as a round tail board. I'm looking forward to getting it out in some quality surf. _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"

I started another paipo this afternoon. Its 44' long, 19' at the tail, and 16' nose 12' from the tip. It's also 12mm ply with a 12mm spoon around the nose. Hopefully I'll have time to sand the spoon in tomorrow, and then it'll be a couple of days to seal it before test time! These things are addictive to build and to ride! I'm up to 19 paipo's and bellyboards now!

BJ,
Good to briefly catch up with you - it was a pretty full day Saturday. Hope to get some pics up soon.
Had fun waves for the entire trip. Can you pm me about the paulownia blanks you get - size & cost. I'm thinking of giving a blank to a mate at Bells who made a pine prototype bellyboard (original design with two long keel type fins and a v in the tail). Like to see him use lighter wood.
regards
