My friend Jason and I are itching to ride these things! Any suggestions for sealing them?

Beaut! Quick and dirty you can paint on or just rub w/ paraffin and drive it into the wood (esp exposed end grain) w/ heat gun or hair dryer. Not as slick a surface as oil or varnish etc but cheeeep and effective. Maybe too good a craftsmanship though. Shapes look very nicely done! |

Thanks Geoffrey, I might try that!
We looked at a lot of your boards before we tried this Mike, it's a lot of work but well worth it!
Cheers,

I've had the best luck (durability)with marine epoxy on my plywood boards. That stuff is quick & easy; and you can put a really smooth slick surface on the bottom if you want.. I leave a lot of texture on the deck coat though. |

Got to give credit: got the idea from Dale Solomonson and have tried it and it is indeed fast and easy. Only down side is the waxy coat sort of collects "lint"... |

BJ,
I'd be fascinated to hear more about the construction method - it looks like a lot of work went into those boards.
Do a search for these threads - they all make reference to finishes
Oiled Paipos
basswood over balsawood
Topcoats
new board
pine paipo
Show us your LATEST PROJECTS ..boards/fins/whatever
I suspect the bottoms are flatter than the original HPDs - will be interested to hear how they ride. What are the dimensions for these boards?

Can you give a walk through on how you shaped the noses? |

Hey Bob,
They're just 12mm ply sheets with 3 wishbone layers to build up the nose. Then lots of grinding and sanding! We're going to run the spoon the whole way to the tail on the next ones so that we can get a bit more roll and curve through the back end. I think we're gonna marine epoxy them this time. Ride report coming up shortly! _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"

First Voyage for the HPD-style Paipo's!
These boards are a total trip! Super fast, turn on a dime! Can't wait to get them out in some clean waves! _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"

We based them roughly on the HPD's, the round tail is 46' long and 28' wide, while the flat-tail is 44' long and 30' wide. In the small onshore surf yesterday the round tail seemed to get up and move a lot quicker, but I'm interested to see how they go in bigger, cleaner waves! They are really good fun! _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"
