Hi all. Just introducing myself on the forums. Just got into paipo boarding about a month ago. Before then I was an avid bodyboarder. No tricks or anything fancy like that, just rode the waves as they came. Got into paipo boarding cause I always saw the old timers at Walls in Waikiki on their paipos just flying across the waves super fast from way outside to the inside by the Wall. I wanted to get more speed when I rode so I decided to ditch my sponge for the more traditional way to ride the waves and I am very proud to say that I haven't looked back since. |

Volcomtohawaii, what can you tell us about your board(s)? There are so many different varieties of boards ridden in Hawaii, ranging from the old McDonalds trays to different sizes and shapes of wooden boards, the HPDs and fiberglass/foam. Where are you riding? _________________ rodNDtube

Hey VC2HI,
Welcome and which island? Nothin wrong with bodyboards, or trays for that matter. Also your manly avatar seems to have destroyed Rod and Mrmike, at least on my computer, impressive. |

I only have one paipo so far but I'm hoping to at least get one or two more made next year sometime. Money is a bit tight at the moment and being in college doesn't help much haha but hopefully I can get two projects started and done next year. Anyways, the one paipo I have has the guitar-pick shape with curved rails and nose. The board itself is about 41" tall and about 27-28" wide at the widest point (at the bottom). I can't remember off the top of my head how thick the board is. It's made from pieces of cedar and mahogany wood that was wrapped in 2oz fiberglass cloth and then coated over with resin. Here's a photo of it from the top deck portion of it:
I'm still learning how to turn with the board but last weekend I made great progress and figured out a trick to turning good with my board. Just have to angle the board diagonally in the direction I want to go before I push the board underneath me when I take off on the wave instead of just point the board straight.
@kage and @ted, I stay in Honolulu, Oahu. |

volcomtohawaii,
Thanks. Do you know much about Bob & his board making story? Don't suppose he has an e-mail address.
