Does anyone know if this show from the USA in the 60's has survived and if so is it available on DVD. It was shown in eastern OZ in the late 60's and I recall that "the wedge" featured on numerous occasions with lots of bodysurf and paipo action. The show went for 1/2 hour with footage from contemporary surf movies and various interviews. |

Not currently available to the best of my knowledge. Haven't thought about it for years but the subject does come up amongst people around in that era. It originated on Channel 9 out of Los Angeles from what I remember.

Ian,
Some additional details from the Encyclopedia of Surfing.
Produced by KHJ-TV Channel 9, 1964 & 1965. Co-hosts were surfing film makers Jim Freeman (deceased) and Walt Phillips
Bob Fiegel co-hosted coverage of the 1964 Malibu Invitational with Richards.
What station showed it in Australia?

Just heard back from Scott Starr who :
"as far as i have been able to figure out.. Not one episode exists
because they were all live tv and never recorded them.. I asked Stan
years ago about it and actually none of the Surf Shows have ever turned up.. No Dale Davis or Walt Phillips surf tv shows.. Lost forever ... but maybe just maybe down the road,, you never know"

the show was broadcast on ?? nrtv/rtn 8, back then there were only 2 stations available in nth nsw, abc or commercial. surf's up was on the commercial station and would have come out of Lismore or Coffs Harbour.
I also recall that it was shown in Sydney around the same time.
I would contest that the show was only produced live, certainly not a satellite transmission from LA to NSW in '67 -'69 ish. It has probably been lost or taped over. |

It amazes me that there isn't a regular nationally televised surf show in this country. I'm not even sure if I think it would be a good thing or a bad thing, just surprised that it doesn't exist. In Santa Cruz we have the occasional goofy public access show ( apologies to any of you goofy producers out there), how about other countries? |

FUEL TV runs surf content including fairly recent surf movies. That seems to be the venue. Gotta have a cable outfit that carries (I don't know squat about Dish etc).
Broadcast tv is dead... |

DirecTV and Verizon FiOS both carry FuelTV. _________________ rodNDtube

Communications have become like drugs...the "average household" will NEED tv, internet, cell phones (1-4 per)...Verizon is one of the companies that can bundle all that...seldom less than $100 a month at the minimum. That's $1200 a year minimum. When you get into the tv part of any provider there are levels of product, and FUEL is almost always at least one step up from basic. Which means if you pick and choose you can buy 6-8 select surf dvd's each year for what you might actually get enthusiastic about from FUEL.
Not really sure if it's cheaper or better than the days when tv came from the sky, phones were dialed, and the surf report was limited to the morning radio show or the NOAA... |

Nels, Kage, Rod,
ignorance is not always bliss. beyond literalism is there any significance
to the term "dolphin glider".
Kage, if cable in the US is anything like OZ then you too can have 100 + channels of repetitious sh*te and pay for the privilege. overstimulation of my visual cortex with tv tends to distract me from the things i want to do. |

It probably means we have posted way too much Sometimes there is a message count and sometimes there isn't. A little technical bugaboo somewhere along the line with some of the posting cues (e.g., number of posts). _________________ rodNDtube

Ian,
I gather Channel 10 now owns RTN (http://www.dtvforum.info/lofiversion/index.php/t41759.html).
Why don't you call them about their archives?

I once suggested the phrase "Ignorance is Bliss" as our TQM motto at a company I worked for. Some people have no sense of humor. It amazes me how quickly one can ferret them out...
I'm an info junkie, can get horribly overstimulated, and can go ballistic as journalism continues to wither and rot. As media delivery continues to mutate I search for a middle ground, a reasonable access level or medium, but they just don't exist in a stable way. Honestly, forums like this seem to be the most reasoned manner for niche interests, little oasis points. Plus you don't have to watch the posturing and listen to the crappy bands FUEL Tv subjects it's viewers to. |
