DaGRizTX,
Did you get a chance to call the surf museum? The Youtube clip you posted is an interesting one, not only because of the paipo footage but because of the links with kneeboarding. Wedge is another area that went from bellyboarding to kneeboards. Interestingly, I have been in contact with a guy, who in the 60s went the opposite direction - kneeboards to paipo. More on this when Rod gets back.
Mr Mike & HIpaipo I have sent you pm's.

DaGRizTX,
Sounds like the response I got from the Torquay surf museum - very zen like.
Once Rod is back, I have completed two interviews for uploading and know John Clark has been working on a few.
Even knowing who was manufacturing them in the US is a start. Bud Hulst, Skip Newell, Rick Newcomb & Jack Hokanson are some people I tried to locate. Then there is Bob Crabb who made the 'ventral vindicator' - the name alone suggests he would be worth a chat.

Because the video was from Santa Cruz (John Manss) I am thinking the museum you are talking about might be the Santa Cruz Surf Museum? They are having some difficulties right now mostly centered around lack of funding. They're staying open but don't seem to have much staff available for inquires - research. Rod tried to to look into any paipo paraphenalia (sp?) when he was out here and didn't have much luck. I can contact a guy out here who's associated with the museum if you would like. John is still around a lot, I don't know him very well but I think the crowds are bugging him (surf-wise) so he seems to be playing a lot of tennis. |

HIpaipo,
I believe John Clark has interviewed Paul. I'll ask if he can post some of it.

I will be down along the Space Coast (Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Melbourne Beach area) next month for about 10 days. Any recommendations on people to contact for interviews? Old collections of surf magazines and related relics? Please let me know. _________________ rodNDtube
