Ever since I have see pictures of Greenough Spoon Flextail Knee boards, I wondered if a flextail paipo would work. Sounds like it might, sounds crazy at the same time... Anyone ever try making a flex tail paipo?

I believe Soulglider was trying to work towards that end with one of his designs. There is no reason why it should not work.

scroll down (watch out, theres pics of beautiful girls scantily clad) to see the brown and yellow spoon/paipo. scroll down a little further and see the twin fin acid splash bottom. the acid splash board is 1 1/2" thick in the last third of the board thinning down on the tail to a little under a 1/2". the nose and forward half of the board is also 1/2" thick. it has a combo bottom. a hull bottom with a very slight concave from nose through tail. very much like a combo of greenoughs spoon and simmons concave hulls. its a much better all around paipo design than the spoon, in that it good in ANY size surf. the spoon has an incredible feeling to it. the steeper the better/faster it goes. but it needs good hollow surf to work correctly...

I'd say Greenough's spoons are not flex tails but flex boards.
He was trying to get as much flex as possible.
Could be why he's now mostly into the mats.
You've certainly got the juice in the islands needed to make a flexspoon perform up to it's potential.
Way more work to make then any other kind of surf board but if it really works for you who cares?....
Greenough's spoons were really rough and tumble, get 'er done jobs but these days they are almost an art form........

mccallum spoons are the top of the line. he's shaped me 2 boards and has helped me on my spoon. they are flawless. and if you are going to pay that kinda dough for 'em, the should be. i cant say that for other guys' work. jeff is a young guy, who rides everything he makes. for a young guy, he's an old soul. he gets it. i cant say enough about his work. i will be bringing up at least one board he shaped for me. romanosky flat out said to me when i enquired, spoons dont work for bellyboards. we differ, they work great and grumpy is right, spoons are a total flex machine, the fins i made for mine are 1/8" chopped up keels, they flex, the board flexes everything flexes! thats why i explain the ride like mats only with control and a whole heck of lot more speed!

I've seen a bunch of Jeff McCallum's boards, he had some at the Sacred Craft expo I was at last year and they usually have a few at the Icons of Surf shop here in town.
His work is really beautiful. You can tell "he get's it". Cool

He could work up some excellent paipo/prone mode boards .....

That's another cool thing about the flex boards, the almost see thru center of the boards made of resin and fiberglass.

thers more to these crazy little boards than the way they look. its best to have somone that knows how they work to help make you one or pay the money, its worth every dime....or have fun, if you have a lot of time and money to burn.

I've always thought the original flex paipo was simply made of 1/4 inch plywood. Direction and degree of flex can be controlled by varying the thickness of the wood, like in the Waylo...

A basic nose-handle sort of paipo has a stiff nose, but can still flex at the rear corners. Very simple to make, and loads of fun.
