|
|
Last years Sacred Craft Expo got me thinking about a project I'd wanted to do for a while and then Poobah's post on Candy Calhoun's board put me over the top.
I bought the rough lumber at Austin in Santa Ana and got the blank glued up; then after a couple bull sessions I turned it over to the Master, Terry Martin who I'd been introduced to some time ago by my good friend and neighbor John Warren.
Terry says the wood I found was the hardest, densest balsa he's ever seen.
Here is the unglassed board.
Top
Bottom
Not Much Rocker
Fins by John Cherry
Something like this...
How do you all feel about a handle?
Candy's board has a really nice one.
This one hanging in Geoff Meyers shops is done well also, looks like it may have been done by the same person.......?
Some old Wes Humpston Dog Town boards with handles but they're not as nice looking......
And this really pretty fugly rope and tube job
What would be the best way to attach it?
I comtemplated using two opposing leash plugs connected with a rope but again not so attractive... |

why screw up a beautiful board with a leash handle? it aint hard to hold onto a paipo and when that occasional mishap happens and you gotta swim, no big deal, you get to test your bodysurfin skills...a winner all the way around. handles and leashes are unsightly...my free opinion.. _________________ soulglider

A leash is a prudent addition to the board - it comes in handy in the seemingly most inconsequential situations. The handle, on the other hand, I believe would really interfere with riding the board since most of us prone riders tend to be far forward on the board. In the pre-leash days it is understandable that handles were installed (they are "short" fixed leashes).
P.S. Nice looking board! _________________ rodNDtube

Very nice board ! The rails seem to be very soft and rounded.
I tried my paipo without a leash or a handle and didn't feel the need to have a leash and no problem holding the board like a bodyboard when being washed by a wave. If the board is light, maybe a leash would be a good option though. _________________ Frogsurfer |

It's anything but light. Terry said it was the hardest, densest balsa he'd ever seen or worked with.
I forgot to weigh it before I dropped it off at the glassers but it's heavier then you'd expect.
I'm making a compromise.
I'm having the glasser put one of these
on the deck sideways, about 6" back from the nose.
Simple and clean but still functional.
It should be done in 2-3 weeks.
Really excited about it....... |

looks cool. hopefully it'll be lower and with a really soft line on top. you probably dont have a gully running through your forehead 6" back. _________________ soulglider

Awsome looking board. I think it would be a shame to mess up the lines with a handle. The leash is probably a good idea, if it ever got out of your hands, you might have a hard time getting it back. Especially if I was in the area. |

I'll hopefully get it back from Moonlight in time for the GBHPG.
Everybody(all avid sufers-shapers etc) who's seen it up close has said the same thing.
"This thing is gonna fly!"

Peter said 2-3 weeks.
I think they may kowtow a bit when you walk in with a T.Martin shaped balsa. |

Uncle G,
The Wegener boards have a hole drilled throught the board. When the board is made a hardwood plug is inserted in the bottom and then a hole is drolled through the board. A rope with a knot in the bottom is threaded through the hole (countersunk on the bottom) a loop is made on the deck for a leg rope.
There are some threads on swaylocks concerning legropes and alaia.
