This 1965 book has a chapter on mat riding and paipo boarding. I scanned several excerpts into PDF format:
http://www.rodndtube.com/paipo/pubs/BookSummaries.shtml#KellyJohn
Fun stuff:
- the HPD shape was called a skim board, in addition to being a fast belly board
- the skimmers were faster than big wave guns out in the big surf
- all you need are baggies or a bikini, some waves and a little free time to have just loads of good clean fun
- the glossary notes that the term paipo is from popular usage but may stem from pae, to ride a wave to shore, and pu, the sea at midtide (Hawaiian). _________________ rodNDtube
