Hello All!!
i found a piece of wood this week while cycling home from the beach, so i cut it out roughly into this (i'm thinking about making it into a twin fin). It's 5/8 inch thick, so no flex in this one.
and this one is made from a piece of plywood i had standing around for some time. It's 1/4 inch thick so loads of flex. I got the idea for a paipo with loads of flex from Nels' alien gonzales, and the shape is loosely based on Surffoils' (you can ride it two-ways), so thanx a lot guys!
greetings,

Ahhhh, found wood is good! It is amazing what can be found along the roadside while cycling, or walking. Have fun, Eef. |

Thanks all!
i put some artwork on the flexpaipo yesterday. The paint is oil-based so it takes a few days to dry (patience... patience...). After that i can start putting on the 4 layers of varnish.

The progress on the fish paipö:
first i put two keels on
and then the graphics. on the bottom a sailortattoo-style mermaid
and on the deck a tree ('cause wood is good)
When the paint is dry in a few days i can start to put the varnish on! _________________ Increasing succes by lowering expectations

Hey eef - I dig what you're doing. One of these days I'm going to score some plywood and make a classic paipo too. Thanks for the inspiration... and thanks to all you guys who take it back to basics about as far as it can go. It's good medicine.

Nice eef! Your boards have the cutest designs.
I have been checking out home depot and eyeing the 1/4" ply, visualizing what shape of paipo I could create out of it....But then reality sets in - I live in apartment, have no porch or patio, no saw, sander, or equpiment of the sort (doh!) I guess the dream will have to wait til I move into a house or at least someplace with a porch |

Thanks Tumak & DKSnap!
@DKSnap: since you live in the Sunshine State, why not take it outside? You only need a basic handsaw, a box to rest the plywood on, some sandpaper and a bit of outdoor paint. Your paipo can be done in a few days!
greetings,

A few years ago Dale S. recommended utilizing a portable workshop. He suggested test-riding a rectangular piece of ply...going back into the beach...cut/carve the planshape a little...back into the water...repeat, until a satisfactory end has been reached. Sounds like a good way to spend the day. |

eef...that actually does sound doable I was under the impression that homemade paipos were shaped using a bandsaw (or jigsaw? been a long time since elementary school shop class!) and electric sander. But I suppose a regular old hand saw and sandpaper could do the trick. Likewise, soaking the wood in the tub to create a little nose rocker shouldn't be a problem. But what about all the coats of varnish, and having to let it dry overnight outside after each coat? That's where a porch would come in real handy, as I assume the fumes would be harmful if it was kept indoors. But maybe I'm mistaken about that...?

eef: talk about found wood. this week on the west coast of the U.S. the surf was 20 to 30 feet. I went to my beach and found 6 broken surf boards lots of paipos in this lot. I don't like foam all that much I like wood better. but free is a good thing

Recycling is GOOOOOOOD!
i picked up a pile of wood on saturday: a friend of mine works at a lumberyard where the packagez of the big plywood-sheets come in with protecting sheets of wood on both sides from the package. They throw these protective sheets away most of the time, so i could pick up a pile
gotta love that! So there are a few more paipo on their way i guess
ow and this: the oil-based painted i did the artwork with on the two paipo's is STILL sticky after a week of drying.
Jeeez, i need to work on my patience a bit more

Eef,saw the video, looking forward to the ride report.
Where do you get your inspiration for the artwork and do you display other art of a similar style?
