I was down in Virginia Beach, Virginia, over the weekend for a surfing benefit, "Ride for a Cause," that was raising funds for the March of Dimes. Great event and format... maybe *really* great because the event sponsors allowed paipo riders to compete in two of the events, Team Surf and Non-Thruster. Two of us participated in the Team Surf as part of my local surf club, Annapolis Surf Club (six riders per team). Turns out we could have participated in the Non-Thruster division as well (many of us thought this was limited to non-thruster shortboards, but not so with a kneeboarder competing). Anyway, I digress...
The setup was at the Sandbridge Pier and large areas were open to free waveriding outside the flagged contest area. I'd been riding the northside of the pier before heading in for some refreshments and rest and noticed a person that was prone riding a board that did not appear to be a sponge. After a couple more rides I decided to paddle out and get the scoop. Turns out to be Terry from the Richmond, VA area. Terry had visited Austin's surf shop after reading on the forum about the "new paipo shaper in town," and I remember Austin mentioning this a month ago or so.
Well, needless to say, Terry is one stoked paipo rider. He's been riding a board kneeboard shaper, Romanosky, in VaBeach and in travels to Costa Rica and Panama. We talked some about shapes, rails, fins, thickness, and the joy of riding a paipo. He tried out my board to see how it handles compared to his shape. Hopefully he'll join the forum in the near future. Maybe we can enter an all-paipo team at next year's contest! _________________ rodNDtube

Yup, a great guy and full of stoke. Hope to see him around more!
I wish I would have known about the other comps...I felt really good on green as the day went on and we could have ripped it heavily on the paipos. Oh well, Brett said he'd do a paipo event for next year. What would be *Very* cool is to have someone (rod) talk about them briefly before the heat, giving people a brief history. I had several people stop me in the PM wanting to know what I was riding.

Rick - plan on attending the "Beach Sweep" Oct 20, and a pilgrimage to the Paipo Palace. Rod can testify - he has worshiped at the shrine of surf...Between Austin, Rod, and I, there's enough small stix for an event. |

One full-timer (me), one part-timer (RickM) and a couple of gazers.
The "Ride for a Cause" March of Dimes benefit surf contest this past weekend featured 6 different boards, two regular riders (Terry and I), a part-timer (RickM) and a new convert that placed an order with Austin Saunders on Sunday, KC Filer (a GP'er gazer this and past years). Austin and his father, Troy, also ride the paipo. KC's new order will be one of the R(od)-Series models, e.g., Troy's:

If I didn't live out in Asheville, I would. I've driven 3k in the last month, I need to give the car a break.
I plan on purchasing one shortly, either new or used. The bodyboard will then be handed down to my daughter for her use until I can get her on some different craft. |

thanks for hooking me up ,rod , and thanks for the nice note too, rick...i have about a million questions about paipo design..shape, thickness, functioning of different rail designs, shape of fins, length of fins, number of fins, factors that effect speed..here's a question: is anyone out there doing any big wave paipo riding..like wiamea bay or mavericks or todos santos? if its being done, what do the boards look like? how do you get in shape for something like that? terryn |

Lot's of good, technical info on fins here:
http://www.4wfs.com/
Shapes: parallel lines go fastest.
Flat rocker boards move more quickly than banana rocker boards; tail rocker makes turns easier.
Turned down, tucked under rails are best along the board, but soft (egg) rails forward are better for turning.
There's a helluva lot more... like thickness, flex, concaves/channels...
Plenty of big wave riding in Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest, but not sure about huge wave riding (ala Mavericks). These huge waves have been ridden in the past on paipos and bodyboards. Of course, it is tougher to get into the wave... late takeoffs become even more critical.
The largest I have ridden my paipo in the past 20+ years is 10-12' at Tres Palmas, PR, and it was a blast. I was also in much better shape a few years ago... I would not paddle out there in my current condition (heavier and not in an exercise routine). I have been riding some 8-10' in Costa Rica the past couple of years. _________________ rodNDtube
