I have been looking through some old books on surfing, including a book by Duke Kahanamoku (who from my reading described paipos as boards for kids in the shorebreak) and came across a book by H.Arthur Klein with the original title of "Surfing".
Written in 1965 the book is interesting for a couple of reasons. One being the amount of attention given to bodysurfing and "semi-boards" (which included paipo boards). The second point of interest is the photos by Don James - there are 4 or so photos of paipos being ridden, mostly in decent sized surf.
Midget Farrelly's book of 1968 devoted a page to "peipo" which he predicted would become very popular - which I guess did happen in the form of bodyboards.
It seems that in the 1960's that there was greater acceptance of the diversity of ways that waves could be ridden.

Back when that book was written paipos were still remembered and explored as being a full-on part of waveriding. I'll have to open some boxes around here...I'm sure I picked up a copy of that book at a book sale. Somewhere I also have a copy of John Kelly's book which even had a sketch of a paipo and insturctions of how to build one. The name of that escapes me completely.
Surfer magazine had an article about paipos in 1969 or 1970 (Vol 10, #2 I think), one page with maybe a photo, and after that POOF! All gone! Until Rod hit the net...

The psychology of post-60's surfing is often all about copying what the herd is designating as "cool." The mind liberated from the norm is truly rare.
The other day I was riding zipping lefthand barrels - one after another - while stand-up surfers all around were experiencing an inability to accomplish anything meaningful at all on the same waves. They were all in amazement of the rides I was getting... but none of them can lay down their big boards and actually go where I go. It's beneath them. It's beneath them to take the logical, reasonable, and intuitive step into the world of prone, reduced medium surfing.

One of the great mind-expanders I've experienced was seeing photos of and reading about El Paipo Grande over on Swaylock's...Paul Gross built it for Roger Kelly to paipo those little Malibu days...8'8" hull if I recall...the thought of an 8'8" paipo was like pulling my conceptions-of-paipo mind inside out.
Love those feelings!
Just think...all those guys in the water with you tumak...all they had to do was catch a wave andnot stand up...do less to get more...less effort expended but then they would be seen by others...cannibal herds turn on what they see as the weak...shoot, it might blow their chances of being on the cover of Surfer magazine, eh? |
