...really fun waves yesterday and today here in Brevard County. Yesterday, when the surf just started to pump from the storm, I surfed at North Spessard Holland Park (my "secret spot"). Every wave had a nice shoulder. My balsa paipo spoon was just all over it.

Today I surfed the Jetties at Port Canaveral, right accross the channel from the Space Center. Same kind of setup, only bigger. Head high peaks all over the place, largely protected from the NE wind! Like yesterday,the spoon was capable of producing such interesting rides compared to the few other stand-up surfers out.

I was out there reflecting on how wonderful paipos really are...how they're so basically cool. We paipo riders are a really lucky lot, my friends.

There is an extreme upwelling of deep cold water right along the coast in the vicinities of Cape Mendocino, CA and Cape Blanco, OR in the summer months. This is mainly due to winds from the North Pacific High pushing the warm surface level California Current away from the coast:

Summer water temps can be colder than winter at some spots in the region. At times this can be somewhat disconcerting to the traveling surfer. Shocked I remember, a few years back on a surfari down the coast at this time of year, going from near 70 degree water in a protected cove above Newport to water in the high 40's down near Heceta Head the next day! It had me mewling pathetically for my 5/4. Embarassed
