I found the door of a cupboard and made a paipo inspired by the shape of the alaias. It's got a slight concave underneath and very thin 60/40 rails like I could see on Tom Wegener's boards. Dims : 16.7" X 41.3"
(I left much of the varnish on top, that explains the difference of color of the rails)
This wood is quite heavy, the board weighs 3.8 kgs !

Looks great. Is it pine? That's usually quite heavy. I used fir wood for my alaia and it weighs about the same as yours... only it's about 48" long.
How does it ride? |

No, it's heavier, denser and harder (but the wood had no knots) than pine but I dont know which wood it is.
It's the first time I try so thin rails, usually I shape surfboard type rails.
I haven't tested it yet _________________ Frogsurfer |

looks like oak to me. I have made some boards out of oak they are realy tough. I like the exter weight lots of momentum when you get going. MRMIKE

MrMike, It's true that the momentum gives it a very smooth and fast ride and the extra thin rails like seen on the boards shaped by Tom Wegener's bite well on the wave face and even turn with ease.
This board really glides ! ... more than the other one I've made (topic "wood paipo #2") with the tatoo style shark drawing underneath. _________________ Frogsurfer |
