Afternoon all,

Long time bellyboarder and bodysurfer though without a BB since 1968 but started in 63. In the process of making another from an old template designed by Barry Hutchins, since retired fish taxonomist in WA. It's glued and doweled western red cedar (as per original) 52" 22" 1" at the thickest point hydro step pintail with 2 FCS type fins with a 6oz glass finish.

With it I surfed Cronulla Point, Voodoo and outside Shark Island at 3x overhead (once!) but lots when smaller.

I think he only ever made abt 8 but they really fly. Style is to use one hand to paddle and once planing support your upper torso with both your upper arms toward the nose, much like a booger.

Anyone this way for some design talk?

VERY happy to find this site!! Very Happy

Hello Puuri.

I'm in Brisbane. I'd like to get in touch as I have been doing research into bellyboards/paipo - especially the Australian history. Some of our interviews are here:

http://www.rodndtube.com/paipo/interviews/Paipo_Interviews.shtml

I haven't heard the name of Barry Hutchins before. Have seen a radical board from WA by Vidler and asked a long time boardmaker from WA about bellyboards but drew a blank. Have been speaking with a number of Sydney boardmakers recently about the 60s and bellyboards.

There will be a few more interviews coming on line soon, with design info included. The 'Paipo Board Design & Building' forum on this site has lots on boards and design.

You can e-mail me at: bgreen AT dyson.brisnet.org.au

Sorry it's under construction. The step is a long arc behind the twin fins and runs from rail to rail and passes at abt 4 inches behind each fin. the arc begins parallel at the leading edge of each fin. Fins are semi Dion style main fin with equal contours (not foiled) and no offset/cant.
