I have spoken to a fellow called Leigh Tingle who rode a paipo in Hawaii around 1964 and has ridden the same paipo for 51 years. He has sent me some footage of him riding Waimea around 1964. I have encouraged him to put this on Youtube.
Below is a 1967 ad from John Witzig's Surf magazine advertising the Barracuda, made by Leigh from ply. I believe the board looks like this

Geoff from surf research advised me: "I think Leigh Tingle is mentioned in the recently released Bob Evans' retrospective, Ride A White Horse (1968), probably originally from his first surf film, Surf Trek to Hawaii (1961)".
On the Aussie theme, a 1959 book by Bloomfield called 'Know-how in the surf' referred to bellyboards as half-boards.
