This issue of Surfer is probably my all time favorite.

It has the 30 page "Curse of The Chumash" article about Malibu which features among other things the infamous shot of Dora dropping his trunks and a two page spread Art Brewer photo of the late Rick Griffin, sitting in front of this immense canvas which also shares the name of the article.
I was fortunate enough to see the actual painting at the recent Griffin exhibit in Laguna fulfilling a longtime wish. It's a big work, maybe 6'X12'?
Griffin was the best..

It also has some of the first camera board shots

AND the Paul Gross article!

A Keeper for sure. Wink

Awww...yeeeeah! Great issue. Maybe that was the last time a wood paipo was seen in Surfer for a couple of decades? Certainly a mat rider if that issue came out after the Woody Woodworth articles on mats.

I was living in Malibu then, Bicentennial summer was great, Alice's was open, fun in every direction all year long. Got a Boogie kit in 1977 I think since Zuma was pretty wide open. Had a chance to ride it unmolested at First Point Malibu one late winter south swell, as longboards were pretty much gone at that time. They were even filming "Big Wednesday" during that period.

Saw that Griffin exhibition in Laguna as well. Heart-stopper. Look across the room at the Chumash painting glowing electric off the wall. Original art for the "Pacific Vibrations" poster, same deal...although so strange to look at it up close, see all the edits and fixes...reminds me now that I think about it of looking at all of Greenough's projects at the Greenough exhibit when it was in Santa Barbara. Functional work...not prepacked gloss.

Nels,
I got chicken skin when I first saw that painting in person. Smile
I have the 1974 Woody Woodworth Rubber Ducky article scanned but can't figure out how to post photos on the surf matz site.
