Thiking about buying a pair because my Duck feet keep giving me blisters.I have a pair of the short v5 model and I like them but I want more thrust. Does anyone use the v7 model? If so how much thrust do they have compared to other fins (ie. duckfeet, UDT)?

I use em. My favorites and I also have udt's makaapu's (sp?) and V5's. The foot pocket is exactly the same as the V5's. They suit my style of kicking which I think is long rather than flutter kicks. They are more thrust than the V5's but less than the udt's, I think. It may be just habit though becuase I can be very unaware of gear. Such as wearing a V5 and V7 without noticing. Very Happy

Thanks for the info . I also use the same style of longer more powerful kicks so they sound like they would be perfect. Very Happy

HIpaipo,

I recall John Galera (from Hawaii) swearing by the viper 7s.

There are actually two types of V5 fins - stiff fin (yellow dot) and flexi fin (orange dot) - this could affect the thrust. The V7 only comes in yellow dot.

Mike Stewart is currently prototyping a new Viper Fin shape for added thrust. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with. He's basically taken a regular pair of V7 and cut a shape out of the flat ends. Lighter and more efficient? Perhaps.

I have the Yellow Dot v5 that I use for bodyboarding and they work fantastic, although not as comfortable as my Redley fins or new Jeff Hubbard Fins. I would like to try the Orange Dot (Soft) Vipers.

If you are in touch with Mike Stewart then I have one MAJOR suggestion - you can read my rant on Vipers for larger feet on the web - to make a larger foot pocket when scaling up from L to XL or even for the size L. When 4 to 7mm of rubber wetsocks are added the foot pocket is simply too tight (width and depth, not length). Thanks!

i talk to Mike once in a while. lately, he's been super busy traveling the world to promote his much anticipated movie called FIRE. Not so much a bodyboarding video as it is a trip through life, his philosophy, etc. should be pretty epic.

haha V10's???

I find the v5's enough for most surf. V10's would be good I suppose for scuba diving? Very Happy

Rod,

Mike Stewart is probably not too hard to contact. I can't recall whether he has a website or is connected to one, but I contacted him in relation to his thoughts about the alaia he was riding. He got in touch promptly.

You might be able to communicate your rant directly.

regards

Bob

I don't mind ranting a little with friends but I would be hesitant to try and contact him directly. He is pretty much bigger than life as far as I am concerned.
V10's, why not? I like the feel and flex of the V7's and have wondered how a longer fin of the same design would feel. UDT's being kind of stiff for my taste.

I have engaged in some positive e-mail correspondence with Mike Stewart. Of note, he has a wide foot so may be sympathetic to some of the suggestions that I made on foot pocket design... including a "wide foot" version of the shoe (flipper).
