Tim,
I first tried both boards in the same session - a sloppy beach break. The board on the left went ok but was a but thin for my liking.
The board on the right I surfed 6 or 7 times, including in the waves below.
I had been told the swell had dropped off and when I drove past the nearby beach it must have been a lull. I just ran down and jumped off the rocks and found it a bit hard at first getting out, but surfed it for several hours. I pulled back on one big hollow one (this was surf 3 on the board) but otherwise gave it a good dig. It could really get some speed up. This was the biggest day I surfed it.
On a small, hollow really lined up point it just flew. Rode a few tubes and overall, it was a really fun board. I'd like to post some close ups of the rail and seek comment on whether it needs a bit more tweaking in the nose - thinning it and softening the rails.
I caught up with Bongoman, we swapped boards and surfed some small waves at the lined up point. It seemed to ride well in a variety of conditions.

sounds fun Bob! glad they work. every boards works, somewhere and for someone. keep at it, but if you want a screamer that works well in big and small stuff try....something like the board down at the bottom of the page on my site at:
http://facefirstandoverhead.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-02-10T10%3A45%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=7
its the fastest board i've ever ridden, turns anywhere on the face, rides tubes, cutbacks, bottom turns and paddles out better than any board i've EVER ridden.
i will post some pics of the finished board soon. its called the scab, cause i told the glasser to mix up the color of dried blood, he nailed it! _________________ soulglider

Mike,
The noses of your boards seem to be getter much wider in proportion to the narrowing tails. How is this affecting performance?
Tim,
It looks like the 'scab' is completely different design to the blue bottomed board - which does look like a very nice board. Is the 'scab' just an experiment or do you think it will do something that the blue board doesn't?

Bob,
yeah they are completely different design ideas. blue bottom, actually the blue was the deck, it was supposed to be a spoon (Belo Velo). the shaper didnt go deep enough and so i carved it out all the way to the glass, and added some fins to it...you can see what we've done to it so far on the page:
http://facefirstandoverhead.blogspot.com/
hopefully it'll be done soon. just have to sand and paint it.
the Scab is an evolution of a board i bought from MrMike last summer. the original was a lot narrower with a different outline. i made my version of it, the sea food platter (its on the blog somewhere. it has the same outline as the Scab (the outline is inspired but the hawaiian paipos of the early 60's) but with less of a concave and no flutes. Seafood is as fast as the Scab but tended to skip around and break free in anything with a little bump on the face. it was fun but, without the flutes, i'm not able to reset the rail like i can with the fluted rail.
it'll probably be the last board i make for a while (besides Belo Velo), both because i'm outa money and because i have a real nice quiver of paipos now. i'll be posting more photos of the other boards as the blog grows. keep checkin back for new and exciting photos and a little gab!
oh yeah, i heard one of the best quotes i've ever heard, "when i go to the park, i ride the swings, the merry-go-round, the slides etc...why would i ride just one type of board?" _________________ soulglider

Tim,
My eyes must be going - the board looked like it had a convex bottom, from your email this must be a concave like deck.I think I'd have to see this in person to get a proper perspective. I'll be interested in how it rides.
Mike,
Thanks, Sounds like you ride longer lined fast waves than super hollow peaky types waves on this style of board?

I just finished another board I was not going to biuld another one but a good friend of mine gave me a $100 gift certificate to the hardwood lumber yard for my birthday. The wood in this board cost $112 it is monkeypod wood with purpleheart and cherywood. The board is 15"nose X 5"tail X 5' long. the marks on the deck are 1/8" deep groves to hold you on the board(we will see if it works)it is oiled this time with tung oil MRMIKE

Mike,
Another work of art. I look forward to the ride report.
I have used tung oil as well as a linseed/turpentine combo and found that whereas linseed dries out after few surfs, tung appears to form a coat that remains. I'm sure the quality of tung oil varies (I used oil that had a UV protectant and was mixed with citrus oil).

I tested the birthday board yesterday at 7:00am @ coronado beach 3 to 4 ft of glassey surf nobody eles out. the deck was not to bad with the oil ( I might fill the groves with silcon cauck for a little more stick ) the tail draged a bit on take off (only 5" wide ) but once it is moveing it is not a problem very very fast down the line and holds high on the face the diamond shape rails hold great and the small tail still lets it turn here is some pic's of the waves I was rideing. taken with my wrist cam MRMIKE
