Hello everyone,
Just introducing myself here -- a old grumpy sponger extremely stoked with the possibilities of paipo. Hoping to find the time to build one (and a handboard as well) based on some of the great designs and discussions I've seen here.
With any luck, I'll have these made by the time my little groms (avid and fearless spongers as well) are released from their state-sponsored indoctrination camps (aka school).
I've been surfing one way or the other for the past 32 years -- some stand up (forgive me) but mostly body and bodyboard. I just love the rush and (pardon me for being sappy) the connection with the ocean I feel. When it is flat I like to do long ocean swims (living in Florida gives me loads of opportunity for this).
I'm looking forward to trading stories and ideas with you fine people. |

Hi spongedaddy, welcome! I'm a former Central Floridian myself...lived in Indialantic for a while, and now living in the West Palm Beach area. Also a longtime bodyboarder who recently caught the stoke for paipo and kneeboarding. Maybe it had to do with turning 30 last year, but I realized I was relating to bodyboarding less and less. Riding a paipo for the first time totally refueled my fire for wave riding. Good luck with making you're own paipo, or get an HPD, either way I'm sure you'll be extremely stoked! Let us know how it goes.

Many thanks for the kind hellos
dksnap -- the expected mid-week swell sort of wimped out from what I hear, but I'm keeping my eye on the buoys and planning accordingly
mrmike -- I've already been rooting around for some plywood. Unfortunately, all that I've found in my garage is 1/2". From the design forum it seems like 3/8" to 1/4" is the preferred thickness.
Again, thanks for the warm welcome.

1/2" ply will work ok if you don't mind doing some grinding on it I use a body grinder with 50 grit. you can get a nicer shape with thicker wood you can get more spoon in it I start with 1" bass wood or balsa wood 34 to 40" long I am makeing a new one as we speak should be done in about a week or so I will send pics when it is finished mrmike _________________ PAIPO ON

Paipo Pirates for sure
Welcome spongedaddy! I went kind of the same route as you, but then with some kayakking and waveski-surfing in there. i LOVE to build my own simple paipo's. Have fun building your own, there are loads of great examples on this forum
greetings,
Eef
