I saw this old paipo trophy from 1972 on ebay....

I was tempted to buy it, but I think maybe it's better if this thing has a chance to stay in Hawaii. The seller actually had 3 trophy bowls. Two with the name Craig Matthew on them. Does anbody here know the history/timeline of these competitons? Where on the North Shore in 1972? I haven't had much luck finding anything with Google.

Interesting find. Probably one of the last paipo contests before the onslaught of the bodyboard. Guess one would have to do some heavy duty research in Surfer/Surfing magazines from the 70s or talk to some folks in Hawaii and Huntington Beach.

One of the other trophies was from September 1981. Third place in Open Paipo for Craig Matthew at the Ninth Annual Makapu'u Bodysurfing Classic.
Ninth Annual...so much History hiding out there somewhere. Sad
