I think part of the answer is that there are two quite different boards that are being ridden. The olo can be up to 16' feet long. The first shot is an olo, whereas the second is an alaia.
It is a fact that some longer alaia can be ridden prone or standing up - these tend to be the boards that are about 6 - 8'. In photo #2, you can see Tom is wearing booties and not fins. He does ride both long and short alaia.
Photo #5 shows the different lengths. The thickness of the boards is a clue to whether they are ridden prone or not. However, photo #15 does appear to be very thin. Photo # 12 is a classic for a finless board.
