Thanks Nels, I'll keep posting until someone tells me to stop.
The cat board had an aluminium grid on the deck, I sanded around the edges so it was tapered towards the edges and then epoxy glued it to the deck. Ive ridden it, the sensation of looking down and seeing the water rushing under your feet is wild. The board was stiff to turn and it warped lengthways as it turned. I shouldve put more layers of glass on. That was about 1995.
Heres the Unifoil finished, I took it out as a paipo but its only just over 300 sq in so it needs more power to really test it.

To put the Unifoil onto a Bodyboard I recessed the screw heads.
Screwed aluminium struts to the foil.
And then screwed the struts onto a bodyboard using several plastic leash plugs.
I will give it a test run tomorrow.
Heres an outline for a new board. Its hard to see. I saw a great video on trimarans http://youtube.com/watch?v=FWINygISxDE And Im keen to try some kind of vertical hull system rather than a planing hull.....have a look and see if youre inspired too.

Surfoils, that's funny, you seem to have mounted the foil with the two tails (swallow shape) forward. I would have put it the other way round.
I like the last asymetrical paipo you drew.
Do you have thought about making the sharp tail flexible so that it it would turn better or be straight and fast when needed ? _________________ Frogsurfer |

Guys, the Crescent tail planshape is a possible FLIPPER style board, another one that could be several boards in one.
"...about making the sharp tail flexible... " With the last one I wrapped the rails with 2 layers of carbon fibre, but I think that if I did the tail section with only1 laminate of carbon, it might allow the tail to flex but keep it strong.
The Unifoil is meant to be mounted with the 2 points forward, theory being that water contacts the hull of a board on a diagonal line...
and therefore theres 2 diagonal Water Contact Lines,( 1 for going left and 1 for going right), and I thought Id see if the hull could be reduced to that shape.
Its an experiment thats tied in with the twin foiled bodyboards I was doing before.
Its not meant to take on Outer Pipe this winter , just to test the theory and do a bit of learnin' at the same time. Or I might get flogged on every wave.....in which case I will have learned something.

An update in the Unifoil I took out this morning...well it works and it doesnt.
Nice sunny day and an uncrowded fast peak to test the foil..
I was doing a 'pitch and run'. ( when you sit right on the cusp of the peak, pitch into the wave, no paddle and then just run straight down the line) its small area means that it needs a lot of power to plane and I even got a tube.
But... it was hopeless out on the face where its flatter and the power drops off.
It was useless on small waves.
And it didnt work on fat waves.
Maybe if it was bigger it would be more suitable in a wider range of conditions but theres a lot of new things to build before I go back and try it again.

Dang, that break looks really nice. It's SOOOO flat back here in Florida right now... flat & HOT!
I stare at my paipo and try to remember what it's like to drop into a nice thick bone cruncher.
You guys have fun... thanks for sharing the stoke! |
