The paipo community lost a visionary Renaissance waterman when Roger Wayland passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 25, 2006.
"He was at the beach enjoying the warm sun when he suddenly
slipped off his kayak and into the water" is how his daughter Ashley described it to me in an e-mail last night (March 16). Cause was a sudden heart problem. He was with a friend who performed CPR and was rushed to a hospital, but to no avail.
I suppose how people die is less important than how they lived. For those who aren't familiar with Roger check out some of his handboard and paipo work. A good place to start is with this basic paipo gallery and construction tutorial:

There will be a memorial with paddle-out Saturday, March 18, 2006, at Bolsa Chica State Beach (Huntington Beach, CA), at 11 A.M. I was told the location is at surfboard station 19 which may also be known as lifeguard station 22 - there will be signs giving directions.

It's very sad to hear this. His designs are inspirational. Rest in peace, waterman. |

Bummer. I was looking forward to meeting him someday. Perhaps the best way to honor him...remember him, is to make your own Wayland bell-shaped plywood paipo. |
