I have flirted with the notion, including in flusher times gearing up with proper equipment (i.e. Bob Carlson's riverboard or one of these Rip Boards http://www.ripboard.com), but between the cold water of the western U.S. rivers and the thought of all those rocks and cobbles my knees say "no no no!"

Here's some photos

Myself, I've only rafted on rivers. Here in California even a southern river like the Kern can be about 50 degrees. You have to be on guard that at some point the hypothermia will cloud your judgement and reaction time. I've heard that for old Klingons it's an honerable way to die.

We have ventured on to some creeks and rivers in Colorado with boogie boards. Loads of fun staging below a single large hydraulic and kicking into the wave, surfing up river. It's a different dynamic where you have to keep the nose up while trying not to get sucked down river. My first effort resulted with a buried nose and getting worked. Having paddled big and small water in canoes, kayaks, and rafts - going for a long float down an angry river on a bodyboard seems risky, with a high degree of difficulty.
