A while back I stumbled on some websites where folks were celebrating what they called International Tiki Day. Here's a copy and paste.
International Tiki Day is a real, fake holiday, in the tradition of Cinco De Mayo. Founded by Kevin Bullat, it takes place the second Saturday of August, and loosely commemorates the successful landing of Thor Heyerdahl ’s Kon-Tiki expedition on the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947.
So anyway I got to thinking it would be a good day for a beach party (in the Northern Hemisphere.) I don't want to go the route of the 2nd Saturday. I want to stick with August 7th....a Sunday this year. One of the thoughts I had, was to have a party wave where everyone rides in far enough to crash on a reef together. Or for the serious Heyerdahl fans....spend all day crashing onto a reef. I'm thinking some place tame, like the algae-covered reefs at Sunset Cliffs. Maybe No Surf Beach. So if you don't want to call it Tiki Day, then you can call it Crash on a Reef Day.
Of course we all can't travel to one spot, but you can celebrate it a home on August 7th, and then share the experience with us in this thread.
So I'm looking for ideas and suggestions. Some of my random thoughts:
1. Make a plywood trapezoid paipo, and paint it Eef-style with an Easter Island Tiki on the bottom.
2. A paipo with shallow twin fins that have the profile of a Tiki.
3. Free Tiki Waxx for party guests.

4. Carve Spam Tikis and roast them on a spit over a beach fire.
5. Topless native women drinking Norwegian beer.
6. What else??? |

I thought about crashing my friend's Tiki Bus on the beach. He might not like that idea
Sounds like a good plan you are proposing (and beats the hell out of this heavily commercialized ISD, a spin-off of alt.surfing's WSD). _________________ rodNDtube

Okay...rough plan:
1. Come crashing ashore at Sunset Cliffs in the morning.
2. Brunch at the Bali Hai on Shelter Island.
3. Tiki making party at Mike's house.
4. Pagan farewell to the setting sun in Coronado (surf until dark). |
