I made my first one late last year after seeing photos of alaias, and eventually paipos. I did a bunch of reading on here and other website, and went for a very simple shape on the first one. I used a 48"x24" piece of laminated pine, and used the curves of my VS Mitch Rawlins bodyboard as a template. I went a little wide on it since I'm a bit bigger, and the final result was 48" long, with a width of 21 1/4" at the wide point and 18 1/2" at the tail. I've only used it about 6 or 7 times since making it, and while it rides okay, it's a bit too slow.
The other day I decided to finally make a new one, so I picked up a piece of 48"x18" laminated pine from home depot and got started. The resulting board is much narrower, and hopefully will be a bit faster. It turned out to be 48" long and 17 1/4" at the wide point and 14" at the tail. I also cut a couple of channels into the bottom, but I think I should have made them a bit closer to the edge. I left the rails pretty square, but I might round them off more after taking it out a couple times.
In the photos, the last coat of finish was drying. After it was dry, I brought it inside and sanded down the bottom with 320 grit to get a really nice smooth surface. In the first photo, the old one is on the right, new one on the left.
