Hello all,
I am new to shaping wood boards (and new to this forum, really cool place), and found a cheap piece of 3/4 in pine at the local hardware store that was wide enough for a traditional paipo shape. What is recommended for sealing it? I have seen threads about using linseed and turpentine, does anyone have any advice on the amount of coats or method for pine?
Thanks,
Noah |

I have made lots of wood paipos and I have oiled some but if you want it to last I start with 2 coats of minwax sanding sealer and sand with 320 after each coat of sealer then I use 4 coats of minwax helmman spar varnish sanding with 600 after each coat. you can use semi or gloss what ever you like then use paste wax on the bottom to make it slickery then go surf it that the fun part. Thanks MrMike, the photos of your boards in this forum were part of the inspiration for me to try to make my own. Is there a loss in board flex with the amount of coats you put on?

not at all the varnish is flexable. epoxi and resin are not. I like to see it when you are done MRMIKE _________________ PAIPO ON

Doing a little experimenting w/ epoxy myself. Used some West Marine 105 (supposed to be flexible)originally intended for a boat resto project on my latest ply paipo. So far so good strength & flex wise. A lot quicker & easier than using varnish. You do add a bit more weight to the board using epoxy & the stuff's kinda expensive too. |
