back in the day i wore churchills. the green ones, then i graduated on to the blue and yellows. i never wore booties or sox back then and only garnered the occasional fin sore. now, it seems, no matter what fin (i've tried, pod, ducks, blunts etc, probably all but the lugunas) and how soft, if i dont wear something i end up with huge sores on my feet and multiple sores at that. i hate wearing booties and sox...i like to feel the water on my feet, keep your heads outa the gutter mates...i never seem to get them around the tendon area, its around the front, just in front of the ankles and also directly on the ankle...help?

I could not wear those green churchills, I thought my feet would throw up when I put them on. But that's not the issue. How about cutting the toes and heels out of a pair of sox? I have some that got so raggedy that I cut the end off. I think you might get the barefoot feeling that way.
As we age (ahem..) the skin gets a little tender I have found. Could this be an issue with yourself also?

Tim,

I get the chafe around the outer side of my ankles - right one especially. My basic understanding is that there is some sort of rubbing hence the chafe. To me it sounds like an interaction between wearer's foot shape & fin shape & personal kick action. If it gets worse with age this could be thinner skin (which happens) +/- some foot shrinkage hence more movement inside the fin.

Fins for seniors - one for the new inventors.

Tech 2 fins have a curved cut in the strap to reduce chafing around the ankle bone. That plus the silicone material and assymetrical foot pockets make them very comfortable fins...even for damaged feet.

Poobah,

I tried the tech2 but sold them pretty promptly. I found I couldn't get the thrust - I much preferred the churchills. Better leg condiitoning on my part might be a solution.

after my feet heal i'll try the new ones i bought. i bout them a size smaller. they feel tight in the store but, i notice my fins feel bigger once i hit the water, shrinkage?

after hobbling around for the past couple of days, i'm going with the cage idea! cut up my old sox! KAGE you are the winner of some Green Churchills! Laughing

Something a lot of people don't consider is that as years/decades go by our feet actually get bigger - gravity and weight etc. If you get a new pair of fins and suddenly you find yourself getting fin sores or blisters on the top of your toes or between them, maybe your feet are getting crammed.

I had been in exclusive Churchill mode for years and years, would occasionally try Duck Feet but couldn't handle them. Finally wanted more power than current Slashers and was down to either Makapuu fins for comfort or ? and tried Duck Feet again and couldn't hack them...until I tried the next size up. We're talking in the store. Was still unsure but bought them on sale for $20 and took them out. Zero problems. Got some neoprene to do the heel straps, in business.

Beyond that, buy a pair of fin socks (easily available in the U.S. and I would assume most First World countries and of course the net)...put them on and then try the fins. Get a set of fin savers too. Fin socks here are less than $20. Gotta have then on before trying the fins though.

DAKINE makes great fin savers, especially for those with big legs. Get the ones that are a combonation neoprene heel strap and fin saver.

As for fins, I think it all depends on your foot, and the way I see it, you have to either modify an existing pair(like my duck feet that i added neoprene to) or find the fin that was made for you(vipers for me because they dont give me any problems, green churchills for you).

As for ageing feet becoming weaker, it probably depends on your feet. For example, I have used black & blue duck feet in the past(1990's) bare footed, and I dont remember them giving me blisters, where as the green & blue duck feet I have now(2008)gave me blisters. BUT, my father who is 53 uses the all black UDTs he has had since high school, they didnt give him blisters then, they still dont give him blisters now. One reason for the blisters could be different rubber, design, bad rubber, or changes in your foot.
