All the talk about wooden boards got me thinking - what are the essential tools required to make a wooden board - either hand tools or power?

Hi Bob,
i use an electric (runs on green power) saw for the rough outline, the rest (shaving and sanding) is done by hand.

Hello Eef,
Which hand tools do you specifically use - drawknife, spokeshave, small hand plane (blade size?) etc.
regards

Those are my tools for shaping wood.
It would be usefull to have power plane. I rented one for shaping my foam bodyboard/paipo.

Mike, I think I read you're retired now.

I might use a belt sander and a router more than most people. My plywood and cork boards can be shaped rather quickly. I think I spend more time on the masonite template.

These are the main tools I use in all my boards:
Jig Saw
Shinto Rasp
Belt Sander
Random Orbit Sander
Plus a LOT of 40-60 grit sand paper! _________________ So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. |

Hi Bob
For the balsa boards I'll use hand tools as it is so soft - stanley knife block plane and sanding block for the rails
for ply boards i'll sometimes use a jigsaw and circular saw but all shaping is done using hand tools
Oh and a black and decker workmate that belonged to my dad
Cheers

I've got a bosch jigsaw and pc random-orbit sander that I like. Fit a somewhat coarse (120g) disc to the sander and it takes off a lot of material, but is a lot easier to control than a belt sander.
I'm also a fan of good hand planes in general woodworking, but haven't done anything fancy yet in the way of board building. |
