hi '
I don't wan't to start any controversy , but around here (San Francisco),we had a rule of thumb for boards that went like this:
anything to 4feet- bellyboard
4 feet to5'6"-kneeboard
over 5'6"- surfboard (also known in bellyboard circles as "land yachts"
Actually I guess a board is what you do on it.

I modified the question... we don't want to hurt Kage's head
Now my head hurts! _________________ rodNDtube

Huh? Not as much as mine! Did you mean to say:
"Should the name which is given to describe a type of a wave riding board be related to the length of the board?"

Sometimes we just have to agree that our head hurts, badly, mildly, more or less...
P.S. Enjoy your trip into NorCal land! _________________ rodNDtube

Yes I will. The primary cause of my head hurting is undoubtedly from spending too much time on the internet. |

"Paipo" works for me. I have two: One's 4'6" and the other is 1/4" under five feet (the Mysterious Turtle). Either one can function as a kneeboard. Try though I may to ride on my knees and consider it viable, I just keep returning to prone position and totally loving it. My other venue is total classic Phil Edwards-style LB'ing on big, heavy single-fins. I love the history and style (sorry!).
Paipo, kioe, or bellyboard - these are just names - but I'd vote to refer to them according to old Hawai'ian tradition: "paipo" is fine!
...looks to me as though today's "kneeboards" are basicaally Aussie thrusters and quads that are just overspecialized "shortboards" that you don't stand up on... 6' in length, and bigger... right? |
