Just looking at the fat logger foil, those nose and tail blocks, skeg, and paint job I gotta think that board is early to mid sixties (1964?) rather than late sixties. Which would make it one of the first of the foam bellyboards. I don't remember seeing them here on the mainland much before this. An expert on that brand of surfboard could probably pinpoint the year by the style of the label/decal. |

Given that classic vintage surfboards moved into the 5 figure range a while back, it only stands to reason that classic bellies and pipes have nowhere to go but up, collector-wise. I mean WE already know what kewl wave riding vehicles they are. Old Greg Noll surfboards already command a premium in the marketplace. A classic Noll bellyboard @ $600 is a good investment.
"If Only I Had Known" Department - file #15967:
My first surfboard was a used 10' 6" Greg Noll "Slot". 3 redwood stringers (5 really as the center stringer was a 3-ply balsa-redwood-balsa lam) and a tail block of cedar-redwood-cedar-redwood-cedar or somesuch, with a re-attached redwood-cedar skeg, that I bought used for 50 bucks. Here's a random link to one I found on the web: http://www.thedirtfarm.com/olddirtphotos.htm
As for carrying it under one arm: only real orangutans need apply. [this is NOT a joke.]
I learned to (really, not play at it) surf on that board in the summer of 1964 and what did I do with it a couple of years later? Hell, who wanted an old tanker when you could get the latest and greatest: a Dewey Weber Performer! (Noll had da cat) So I cut the front half off (made a great addition to a beach bonfire!!!) and turned the tail into a HOME MADE BELLYBOARD : present value $0. I should'a put the Slot in the rafters at my parent's. It's probably worth the equivalent of a new Civic nowadays. |

My first board, a classic 9'4" Hobies noserider, would probably be worth tons of $ today, but it was chopped down into a shortboard during the Spring of 1968. No regrets... it brought millions in joy _________________ rodNDtube

$500 range is what I expected for the Duke.

Have a Duke sticker from busted longboard @ N. W. Pipe, maybe put on homeshape, sell ebay. Take crew out for grinds, warm inner core , Duke style. |
