Is Keener Kontagious??
by SteveM

OK, here's the scenario:  Rod is in town for his pre-GP2K1 duties in Va.Beach. He lets me
know when and where he's gonna be.  I e-mail him and let him know I'll probably
stop by and hopefully catch a session if the waves are good.  I get home after school
and it's a great day, weather-wise: Sunny, 80-some degrees, offshore winds. I find out Rod
has a break between work and dinner, so I hop on my trusty, rusty bike to check out the
surf and either turn around to get my board, or continue on if there's no surf.

I pedal on down to the boardwalk, enjoying the late afternoon warmth and nice breeze.
I get down to the boardwalk, look out at the water, and.....   Flat.  Flat, flat, flat.
No point in getting the board, so I continue to bike along the boardwalk...
At least it's a nice day.  As I look out at the water, all I can think is, "Damn, this is the
flattest I've seen it all year...Even in the dead of Bermuda High summer, I've seen more than
this."

As I continue pedalling along and shaking my head in bewilderment, wondering what
went wrong, it occurs to me:  KEENER!  "Damn, it's the Keener factor!"  No, he's no longer on
the East Coast, but he had just visited here.  Not only that, but I think he met up with Rod.
And now, Rod is here and it's as flat as I've seen it in a long time. It's Keener!  I think Keener
is contagious, and his swell-killing virus was passed on to Rod.  Talk about your
biological warfare!

Anyway, I got to Rod's room and knocked on the door, but no answer.  So, I continued to the
end of the boardwalk and did notice a few of the "social surfers" squeezing a few short rides out
of some Lemons for waves. They were probably about knee high at best....Lemons for sure.

After watching the squeeze-fest for a little while, I hopped back on the bike and started
pedalling back up the boardwalk.  As I approached Rod's temporary abode, I saw the sillouette of
a person on the balcony of Rod's room.  Hmmmm, maybe he was outside on the deck and didn't
hear my knock.  I went back up to his 12th floor penthouse view and knocked a little harder
on the door this time.  Sure enough, he answered. In his usual part generous, part noble effort to
culture me, he offered me a beer of higher quality than the usual Bud Light I drink.

We talked some of the dying Va.Beach swell, and some of the upcoming GP2K1 event along with my
still unfinalized plans of exactly when I will be attending--But hey, that's how a surf trip is supposed
to be anyway, right?

Anyway, I've already made my guarantee for rideable waves (waist or better) for GP2K1, and with a strong
front expected to pass on Saturday (I think we'll get some wind swell early), and with some tropical systems
trying to form (I think will get some tropical juice later like Wednesday or Thursday), I'm still holding
with the guarantee.  I tell ya what, though, with Rod, Foon?, and some other GP2K1 attendees who have
been in contact with Keener lately, I think I have a formidable fight to overcome the Keener factor and
his contagious swell-killing virus.

Did Dave Blake send you on a mission, Keener??

<insert smiley face here just in case Blake mistakingly thinks I'm attributing him with
more importance than he really has if I don't include it>

<insert another smiley face here for that last smiley face>

me too!

<g> ;-) <lol>

Later,
Steve
